ASU’s University Sustainability Practices (USP) is measuring the diameter of tree trunks around the Valley in order to estimate/catalog the amount of carbon being sequestered. However, the measurement of these trees is very time and labor-intensive as trees need to be measured individually, by hand. USP would like the Carbon Capture team to come up with a way of measuring the tree trunks automatically to make data collection more efficient. Currently, the team is prototyping with different sensor configurations on tree band-like devices. Tree bands wrap around the tree stem to measure stem circumference. Our tree bands will be tested using an expandable cylinder as an ‘artificial tree stem.’ We will also attempt to transmit data from the tree band to a receiver.
