Australia Solar Fuel

Project Description

There is a need for a renewable carbon neutral fuel source on the planet with the impact of climate change. Other fuel such as biofuel and electric vehicles either release the same CO2 or damage the environment in their manufacturing process. The fuel made from atmospheric CO2 uses only preexisting pollutants. This makes it a socially and economically favorable fuel that would not only help the environment, but be able to have a premium price on it.

We are trying to implement a system that has the ability to capture Carbon from the atmosphere. Which can then be converted into dimethyl ether, which is out fuel of choice. This process would require hydrogen and water, leaving water as the only byproduct and be solar powered. First using hydrogen to create methanol through a synthesis reactor reaction. Then a dehydration reaction, removing water from methanol and leaving dimehtyl ether as the final product. The hydrogen and water would have to be bought, and excess water as a reaction byproduct can be converted to hydrogen through electrolysis. This would have a net neutral impact of carbon emissions.
