Project Description

Combating climate change is debatably the most important challenge facing the world today.
One of the best ways to thwart global warming is to shift to using more sustainable energy
sources. The United States currently generates 17% of its energy from renewable sources like
wind power, hydropower, solar, and geothermal energy. Our team, currently in our second
semester, is exploring the use of a relatively new alternative energy, piezoelectricity. This form
of renewable energy is the electric charge that is produced when ideal piezoelectric materials
like quartz are exposed to a mechanical stress and deformation. We propose implementing a
walkway embedded with piezoelectric materials to capture energy from human footsteps and
directly power different items.
