The Change the World event celebrates the imagination, efforts and achievements of ASU students. In March 2023, students participated at the Sun Devil Stadium through art displays, idea pitches, live performances and solution exhibits. The 2nd place winner, Lake Litter Solutions, an EPICS team, addresses the litter that has accumulated in the water of Tempe Town Lake. Tempe Town Lake is a man-made lake used for recreation. Numerous sports teams at ASU utilize the water and community events such as triathlons take place at the lake. Many participants of these events complain about the levels of trash in the lake. The EPICS team has decided to look into alternative methods for removing trash from the lake. The group chose the surface and underwater robot system as the most effective method for trash collection. This option provides the most value because it is able to clean above and below the surface. Dakota Edwards, one of the team leaders of the project expressed his excitement from the win and thought the most rewarding aspect was his team. Dakota says “To see my team working on this big thing, and knowing that they’re growing and developing the skills they want to learn in a safe and encouraging space is just so heartwarming”. Jessica Maschino, the other team leader for the project, learned that EPICS is not about how much knowledge you have, but rather the “ability to listen to others and the willingness to learn new things”. She shares that “EPICS is one of the only places where you learn that the most important skills for engineering aren’t necessarily coursework”. Dakota emphasizes the same idea of how EPICS teaches the “ important skills you’ll need to be successful in life”. It is exciting to hear and see the amazing impacts EPICS has had on people. Congratulations to the Lake Litter Solutions team on your win!
