Project Description

Suriname, one of South America’s smallest countries, heavily relies on food imports from neighboring Latin American nations. To address this dependency and enhance the quality of life for its farmers, a multi-faceted approach is necessary. This includes initiatives to bolster local food production through supporting small-scale farmers with training and resources, investing in agricultural infrastructure to facilitate market access, providing farmers with access to appropriate technology for improved productivity, promoting crop diversification to mitigate risk, addressing land tenure issues to ensure secure rights, fostering the development of agribusinesses to add value and create jobs, and encouraging the adoption of sustainable agriculture practices to protect natural resources and bolster resilience to climate change. Through these measures, Suriname can reduce its reliance on imports, increase farmer output, and promote a more sustainable and resilient agricultural sector.
