Global EPICS in South Africa
Our team is engaged in a conservation and preservation project in South Africa, specifically focusing on Big Game/Safari Conservation along with our community partner, Rudie Strauss, who is the lead of the Makerspace at the University of Johannesburg. Our primary emphasis is on addressing the critical issue of poaching within national parks and wild game reserves. The poaching of rhinos is having a profound impact on their population, with only 26,272 rhinos remaining, and unfortunately, 548 rhinos were killed in 2022. Our specific focus involves creating a monitoring device for rhinos in private game reserves. This device aims to enable rangers to effectively monitor the animals, track their locations, and respond promptly in the event of identified threats. The urgency of our work is driven by the alarming statistics, and we are dedicated to contributing to the preservation of these magnificent creatures.
