Project description
We propose a collaboration with EPICS to design and produce a durable compost bin made from upcycled materials in the United States. Currently, our organization spends significant funds on compost bins that are often imported, prone to sun damage, and made from virgin plastics. By taking the manufacturing process in-house, we can reduce costs, minimize transportation-related emissions, and provide more schools with reliable bins. This initiative would allow us to expand our impact, offering better onsite composting solutions to over 100 public schools nationwide.
Design a Durable, Sustainable Compost Bin: Develop a compost bin prototype made from upcycled materials that can withstand outdoor conditions, especially in harsh climates. Streamline In-House Manufacturing: Establish a production process that minimizes costs, reduces reliance on imported materials, and uses environmentally friendly techniques. Optimize Material Sourcing and Supply Chain: Identify and secure local, sustainable materials for bin production while managing logistics to ensure cost-effectiveness and environmental responsibility. Scale Distribution to Support Public Schools: Increase the number of schools equipped with compost bins by producing affordable, high-quality bins, enabling broader participation in composting programs. Ensure Regulatory Compliance and Sustainability: Meet environmental standards and regulations (particularly school health guidelines for onsite waste services) while achieving emission reductions in both transportation and production phases.
– Product Design and Prototyping: Expertise in CAD software like SolidWorks or AutoCAD for designing compost bins and creating prototypes.
– Material Science and Engineering: Knowledge in upcycled and sustainable materials to ensure the bins are durable and suited for outdoor environments.
– Manufacturing Processes: Familiarity with production techniques such as injection molding, rotational molding, or other processes suitable for sustainable materials.
